The O’Chiese Marketplace will present the Sunchild-O’Chiese Cadet Corps

with a donation cheque for $2500!

On Tuesday January 28, 2020 the O'Chiese Marketplace is donating the Sunchild-O'Chiese Cadet Corps $2500.

The Sunchild-O’Chiese Cadet Corp was created by Cst. Todd DePagie in 2009 after many meetings with the Chiefs,

Elders, community and the start up of the board the first Sunchild-O’Chiese Cadet Corps occurred on April 20, 2010

and have since then been assisting Aboriginal youth to develop self-esteem and learn the dangers of drugs and gang

activities while providing positive activities for the youth on both Nations. Cst. Depagie was transferred in 2013 but

the work he created carries on.  So for the 10th year of the Sunchild-O’Chiese Cadet Corps the Marketplace upon the

direction of Chief Douglas Beaverbones is donating $2500 to continue to keep providing this activity for the youth.

O’Chiese Band Manager Notes to you…Community Members

January 31, 2020

I took an extra 3 days off knowing that January would be a very busy month.  Unfortunately, January also met us with sadness, so I send the Nations condolences to the impacted families. It can be a very trying time and this is a time to count on the closeness of our family and friends. Please utilize the services of the counselors and therapists at the health centre. Take time to mend and know that grief comes and goes…just know we think and pray for you. And we need to thank our first responders, Shane Poorman and his staff!

The first week of January was hectic we started off with the Finance Department meeting with our Auditors to get a head start on our audit and soon we will be at year end. We will also undergo office changes and a little of restructuring so we can become more efficient and expect to have our audit done on time. As you know over the past 5 or more years, several Finance Managers, not from our Nation have come and gone and created a backlog that we are amidst correcting.  Due to this backlog, we have come to learn that increasing our education to include degrees and experience will increase our chance of success.  We have several finance department employees taken the initiative to further their own education while continuing to work. As well, we have many managers in other departments that are also taking ongoing training, educational course work and attending specific workshops that enhance their experience and learning.  The Nation Leaders continue to encourage and support as we further our professional development.

Our Nation Leaders had noticed that we were working in silos and are encouraging our Departments including Business Investment Centre to working collaboratively. We see the partnership initiatives with S.A./ Post-Secondary/Health Centre/Red Deer College, /ASSETs and Property Management/Education, Health Centre/ Education, Property Management/ Business Centre/ School, Public Works and on it goes.  With these progressive initiatives, in the future, employing home care workers in the health projects, high school students can obtain their 1st and 2nd year and eventually the rest of the 3rd & 4th year apprenticeships and take control of our housing and there are many other ideas, projects and work experiences.  Finally, those of us who have degrees already can supervise field placements’ such as Social Work Practicums, those with Trade tickets can apprentice and we can mentor.  Our Elders are a fine resource to teach us language, history, treaty and stories.  These are fine examples of working together.

We also have young workers who are trying to organize a Youth Council. This Youth Council can have a huge impact in our community, other communities and even government. We want our youth to be strong in their voice, provide them with knowledge to understand the aspects of federal and provincial government, our treaty, our language and governing currently using our language and knowledge.   Your voice is needed not only in our families, but in our community.  This Youth Council can be very dynamic, Political, knowledgeable and cultural.  In addition, there are other communities who have Youth Councils and are asking and inviting us, but we are just beginning.  We know that there is so much pain, drugs and it seems like no hope, but we only see what we want to see sometimes.  One of our youth sits on a RCMP /Youth Committee, sometimes we have no idea how we contribute to the larger world, but we do and we need you…we are making our mark and making in-roads to change and hope.

Thank you to Phyllis and Joanne for organizing and holding memorable fun Elders meeting January 22-24. It was educational, heartfelt, insightful and very productive. Our elders are helping us, and we are helping them tell their stories of what they know of treaties, governing, ceremonies, cultural teachings and bringing up our children in our ways. We discussed some of the ways that government tries to contain costs, programs and our Treaty rights and take away our rights. We talked about bringing back our ways, the circle of life gaps, fears of residential and day schools and recognizing those losses and impacts to our families and children. We are one of the last Nations to sign the Adhesion to Treaty 6.  The Elders have encouraged us when ready to begin teaching these at home, school and live it daily.

Feb 4 & 5 is our Community meeting where you will hear about our new waste management facility coming. We need to be proud of Malcolm, Oliver and his staff as they restructure for this, figuring out how they will educate you and teach you how to recycle. Watch for informative flyers and workshops on how to recycle and of upcoming changes!

Thank you and talk to you next month,

Beatrice Carpentier, O’Chiese First Nation Band Manager
