AITE Card Elimination - NOTICE OF DATE CHANGE

Due to concerns and potential challenges raised by various First Nations communities and AITE retailers, the transition from the AITE card to the federal status card has been delayed to October 4, 2021. This change was originally expected to take place on June 21, 2021.

Further information on the elimination of the AITE card is below.

  • Starting on October 4, 2021, AITE cards will no longer be accepted as proof of eligibility for tax exemptions. These cards should be destroyed after this date.
  • As of October 4, 2021, any version of a federal status card, or the Temporary Confirmation of Registration document issued by Indigenous Services Canada, will be the only accepted proof of eligibility for tax-exempt purchases on reserve in Alberta.
  • Individuals that require a replacement federal status card because theirs is lost, stolen, damaged or has been destroyed, can request a Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document from Indigenous Services Canada. The government encourages them to do this as soon as possible.
  • Individuals who do not have a federal status card should work with their band registration office and/or Indigenous Services Canada to complete dual application for a laminated card with their band and the federal status card to be eligible for tax exemptions on October 4, 2021, and beyond.

See the AITE webpage for more information about this change including updates to:

We have also received requests for additional webinars outlining the changes. Sessions will occur in June. Invites will be sent in early June once these sessions have been scheduled.
